Style Analysis Essay
The “Zen Parables” are a group of of third person parables written by anonymous author that are used to emphasize how people should live their life. In “Muddy Road” & “A Parable the authors indicate that you should live life at the moment & always look for the positive in life to promote their message the authors use Metaphors & imagery.
In “A Parable” an anonymous Zen Parable the author uses metaphors to argue that you should see the positive in life. The parable starts with a man that encounters a tiger in the forest and is forced to hang on the vine. While hanging he spots another tiger at the bottom of the vine. In addition two mice begin to gnaw on the vine. The tigers are metaphors for a bad situation that everyone encounters in their life. The mice symbolize time because they make the man reach his fate. While hanging on the vine the man sees a strawberry. He then picks the berry and proceeds to eat it ending the parable with how splendid the strawberry tasted. When talking about the strawberry he is focusing on the positives. The parable uses metaphors when commenting about the tigers, mice, and strawberry and uses them to emphasize that everyone should look for positives in live. Therefore the author argues that you should stay positive in life even in bad situations.
In “Muddy Road” two Buddhas encountered a woman on the side of the road. The woman couldn't cross the road because it was covered in mud. That is when one of the Buddhas, Tanzan, lifts the women and carries her across the road. Ekido, The Buddha who was walking with Tanzan, does not comment about Tanzan's actions at the moment. It was not until they reached the lodging temple that Ekido commented that Buddhas don't approach women and he should have not do that. Tanzan respond with “I left that girl there. Are you still carrying her”(1127). When Tanzan says i left that girl there he is indicating that she is in the past and is no longer thinking of her. Are you still carrying her refers to Ekido thinking about the past when he should be focusing on the present. Clearly the parable Emphasizes that you should focus on the present and should not worry about the past.
“Muddy Road” and “A Parable” specify that you should live your life in the moment and to look for positives in your live. The Zen Parables are a group of anonymous parables written Buddhist monks. The parables use Rhetorical devices to argue to how to live life. Clearly the Parables argue that you should live life in the moment and to be positive.
You gave good examples of metaphors and imagery.
